Research Interests
Rosemary Wildsmith-Cromarty’s research interests include first, second and multiple language acquisition, language teaching pedagogy, language and cognition, literacy and bi-literacy development, translation between non-cognate languages, language-in-education and multilingualism. Her publications cover topics in all of these fields. A more recent research direction is in the field of discourse development in specialised fields for selected professions, with a focus on African languages.

Professor Wildsmith-Cromarty is a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Language committee, having served on this committee for nearly 10 years. She has also been re-elected to the English National Language Body for a further term of office, having served on this body for over 10 years. She is a member of the International Advisory Board for the Cambridge journal Language Teaching: Surveys and Studies, and co-editor for the journal Southern African Linguistics and Applied Language Studies. She has recently been elected to a special interest group on multilingualism, language policies and planning comprising a number of South African tertiary institutions. She was also a member of the University Language Board and part of the Special Senate Task Team mandated to work on the Language Policy of UKZN.
