• Italian 1A

  ITAL101 H1

  Aim: To achieve communicative competence in Italian at an elementary level.

  Content: This is an introductory language course. The emphasis is on a culture-based communicative approach involving the four main skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The focus is on non-touristic Italian life and on aspects of the students' own experience. A component of the module is language acquisition through the medium of film and video, in the context of contemporary Italy.

  Assessment: Examination/Continuous Assessment

  DP Requirement: 90% attendance and timeous submission of all assignments and course work.

• Italian 1B

  ITAL102 H2

  Prerequisite Requirement: Italian 1A

  Aim: To achieve communicative competence in Italian at an intermediate level.

  Content: Focus is on the recognition and expression of feelings and opinions. Topics are more general than in the previous semester and include a degree of abstraction. Culture is taught by means of authentic texts in Italian - newspaper and magazine articles/advertisements, radio and TV programmes/advertisements, interviews, films - on a number of themes relevant to contemporary society.

  Assessment: Examination/Continuous Assessment

  DP Requirement: 90% attendance and timeous submission of all assignments and course work.

  ITAL201 H1

  Prerequisite Requirement: Italian 1B

  Aim: To achieve further communicative competence in Italian at an intermediate level, with a focus on the expression of abstract ideas.

  Content: The module includes advanced elements of grammar and various aspects of Italian culture such as Italian literature, cinema, songwriters, theatre, art and daily life.

  Assessment: Examination/Continuous Assessment

  DP Requirement: 90% attendance and timeous submission of all assignments and course work.

  ITAL202 H2

  Prerequisite Requirement: Italian 2A

  Aim: To achieve communicative competence in Italian in increasingly complex situations. Students are encouraged to engage in the spoken language at all times, and day-to-day cultural situations are introduced in an Italian environment.

  Content: The module includes advanced elements of grammar and various aspects of Italian culture such as literature, cinema, songwriters, theatre, art and daily life.

  Assessment: Examination/Continuous Assessment

• Italian 3A Advanced

  ITAL301 H1

  Prerequisite Requirement: Italian 2B

  Aim: To achieve communicative competence in Italian at an advanced level through exposure to written and oral documents.Students will also be exposed to contemporary Italian poetry and prose.

  Content: The module includes advanced elements of grammar as well as authentic documents in Italian, including Italian literary texts from the 20th Century.

  Assessment: Examination/Continuous Assessment

• Italian 3B Advanced

  ITAL302 H2

  Prerequisite Requirement: Italian 3A

  Aim: As this is the culmination of the Italian major, the module aims at consolidating the students' proficiency in the four basic language skills at an advanced level, with greater focus on self-expression and writing skills. It provides an overview of the more advanced aspects of syntax and stylistics. Literary texts are chosen according to themes that highlight contemporary social issues.

  Content: Advanced Italian syntax and grammar, basic translation taken from diverse language registers, selected reading, contextualisation and discussion of contemporary Italian literature.

  Assessment: Examination/Continuous Assessment
