• German 1A: Introduction to German Language 1

  GERM101 H1

  Aim: Understanding of simple spoken and written German; knowledge of simple German grammatical structures; understanding of the geographical, historical, social and cultural situation pertaining to German-speaking countries.

  Content: An introduction to basic German oral and written communication and the study of geographical, historical, social and cultural aspects of life in the German-speaking countries.

  Assessment: 40% class work, 60% examination

  DP Requirement: Submission of all written work on time and compliance with the attendance requirement of 80%.

• German 1B: Introduction to German Language 2

  GERM102 H2

  Prerequisite Requirement: German 1A

  Aim: Extended vocabulary and more complex German grammatical structures in everday situations, the writing of simple dialogues, understanding further aspects of geographical, historical, social and cultural factors pertaining to German-speaking countries.

  Content: The introduction of more complex Germann oral and written communication and a more detailed study of geographical, historical, social and cultural aspects of life in German-speaking countries.

  Assessment: 40% class work, 60% examination

  DP Requirement: Submission of all written work on time and compliance with the attendance requirement of 80%

• Scientific German

  GERM104 H2

  Aim: To enable students and staff to read scientific/technical texts in German.

  Content: The second-semester half-module accommodates in particular, senior students and staff in the faculties of Engineering and Science who require a reading knowledge of German for professional purposes, it is also open to other faculties. A systematic discussion of relevant grammatical forms and structures enables students, by the end of the module, to read, with minimal help, from a dictionary, scientific/technical texts in German.

  Assessment: one 2-hour paper in November, 40% class work, 60% written examination

  DP Requirement: Submission of all written work on time and compliance with the attendance requirement of 80%.

• German 2A: Intermediate German 1

  GERM201 H1

  Prerequisite Requirement: German 1B or Grade 12 German or good informally gained knowledge of German.

  Aim: Active written and spoken vocabulary appropriate to specific situations; critical understanding of the significance of historical, political, social and cultural factors pertaining to German-speaking countires; understanding, analysis and interpretation of texts.

  Content: German language instruction, including translation into English; topics from German culture and civilisation, introduction to German literature.

  Assessment: 40% class work, 60% examination

  DP Requirement: Submission of all written work on time and compliance with the attendance requirement of 80%.

• German 2A: Intermediate German 2

  GERM202 H2

  Prerequisite Requirement: German 2A or good informally gained knowledge of German.

  Aim: Extensive active vocabulary appropriate to a large number of situations; critical understanding of significant historical, political, social and cultural factors influencing the German-speaking countries; a critical understanding of analysis and interpretation of texts.

  Content: German language instruction including translation into English; further topics in German Civilisation; analysis and interpretation of contemporary and older German texts.

  Assessment: 40% class work, 60% examination

  DP Requirement: Submission of all written work on time and compliance with attendance requirement of 80%.

• German 3A: Advanced Language & Literature 1

  GERM305 H1

  Prerequisite Requirement: German 2B

  Aim: To provide learners with critical awareness of language and of how meaning is formed and conveyed in texts; to enhance learners' communicative competence and their ability to read with critical understanding; to develop learned understanding of German literature and culture.

  Content: Language and translation; intercultural and literary themes from the 20th Century to the present.

  Assessment: 50% class work, 50% examination

  DP Requirement: Submission of all written work on time and compliance with the attendance requirement of 80%.

• German 3B: Advanced Language & Literature 2

  GERM306 H1

  Prerequisite Requirement: German 3A

  Aim: To further enhance learners' critical awareness of language and of how meaning is formed and conveyed in texts; to further learners' communicative competence and their ability to read and write German with critical understanding; and to extend learners' understanding of German literature and culture.

  Content: Language and translation; and additional cultural and literary themes from the 20th Century to the present.

  Assessment: 50% class work, 50% examination
