• German Honours: Genre

  GERM701 HC

  Aim: To provide learners with the opportunity to study in depth a genre in German Literature. Learners will deal with the theory and the history of the genre of their choice, and with relevant textual examples of the genres. The module further aims to introduce learners to research in this area.

  Content: A historical perspective on the genre; theory of the genre; preferred themes and structures of the genre; analysis and interpretations of selected literary texts.

  Assessment: 50% examinations; 50% class work.

  DP Requirement: Submission of all written work on time and at least 8% attendance of all classes.

• German Honours: Period of Literature

  GERM702 HC

  Aim: To provide learners with the opportunity to study in depth a period of German Literature. Learners will deal with the theoretical and the historical foundations of the period of their choice, and with relevant textual examples from the period. The module further aims to introduce learners to research in this area.

  Content: Social and historical background of the period; theories of literature of the period; preferred themes and structures of the period; analysis and interpretations of selected literary texts.

  Assessment: 50% examination; 50% class work

  DP Requirement: Submission of all written cork on time and at least 80% attendance of classes. 

• German Honours: Teaching German Language

  GERM703 HC

  Aim: To prepare learners to teach German in secondary schools; to understand and apply theories of language learning and teaching; to enable students to plan, execute and evaluate their German lessons; to enable students to present efficiently interesting learner-centered lessons in German; to understand and apply their insights into learner-specific difficulties.

  Content: Didactics and methodology teaching German as a foreign language; communication and social forms in class; planning and evaluating lessons; the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing; grammar lessons; civilisation lessons; selection and analysis of teaching materials.

  Assessment: 50% examination; 50% class work, including at least 6 sample lessons.

  DP Requirement: Submissions of all written work on time and at least 80% attendance of all classes.

• German Honours: Teaching German Literature

  GERM704 HC

  Aim: To provide learners with a sound basis in the theories and practices of the teaching of German as a second or third language at a secondary education level.

  Content: The functions of literature teaching in German as a second or third language; considerations on literary texts as documents and artifacts; teaching German literature as language - linguistic considerations; practices of teaching literature in German as a second or third language.

  Assessment: 50% examination; 50% class work, including at least 6 sample lessons.

  DP Requirement: Submission of all written work on time and at least 80% attendance of all classes.

• Special Topics in German Literature

  GERM707 HC

  Content: From time to time the German Programme is able to offer one or more special modules, the purpose of which will be to explore new areas and themes emerging in the discipline, or arising from the research of current or visiting members of the teaching staff.

  Assessment: 50% examinations; 50% class work.

  DP Requirements: Submission of all written work on time and at least 80% attendance of all classes.

  
  

• Research Paper: German

  GERM7RP HC

  Aim: To enable students to conduct supervised research on an approved topic leading to a mini-dissertation.

  Content: Introduction to research paradigms and methods, to proposal writing, and individual research on an approved topic.

  Assessment: Examination of the dissertation
